I am sweet,
pure sugar cane and honey combined,
sticky like a summer sun,
and I melt on your tongue
like a kiss you’ve been craving for far too long.

Realisation comes in tumults,

in rings and rivulets of lust mistaken to love

below your black-heeled toe.

Leave me for a rotten penny on the sidewalk

because I equate myself to Shakespeare’s great heroes

with honeyed poetry on their lips

and sharp tongues that make wounded women

dead with hearts on their sleeves

and open eyes staring to a heaven

that cannot accept such wanton lust.

And I am penning poetry to a stranger

in a dirty train station with the sound of rain

booming like thunder along the tracks,

as if the words unspoken, gaze unwanted

can somehow turn this lust to love.

In the instance we break

through mirrors and walls

past the silences of our mute tongues

and lips sealed together with years of practised rust,

and I see your soul reflected

in the colour of sunlight across the horizon –

the colour of cold glass,

clear, pure and empty

as if all the years have been wiped away

to nothing.

Cold coffee on January mornings

sitting by an open window

watching snow crash down

white against gravel ash,

head filled up with winter grief

watching life fly by in a dash of white flurry,

a storm of dreams gone by, another January morning passed

with cold coffee and the coldest dreams.

Apologies for the inactivity on this blog but with NaPoWriMo starting, I have also begun shifting around my time to actually find some space in the day to write poetry once more. Hope NaPoWriMo is going well for all of you so far!

The Finish Line – NaNo Week 4

November 30, 2015 § 2 Comments

NaNo-2015-Winner-Badge-Large-SquareAfter many writing slumps and days spent feeling genuinely quite awful about how my writing was going, I did eventually end up getting to the finish line. The great thing about working on a collection of short stories for NaNo this year, is that I could actually finish up in 50,000 words, instead of getting to the 50k mark and thinking, “well, gosh, another 50k – maybe more – and I might finally be finished this book!” It was nice to have a sense of finality with this project.

Today is the last day of November and to everybody who has already hit the 50k mark, well done! You guys deserve a pat on the back and probably a good long sleep. To everybody who is still striving for that 50k, you can totally do it! And to everybody who has struggled their way through and knows they aren’t going to get to the 50k mark by midnight tonight, a well done to you too! NaNoWriMo has always been about writing and to write even a thousand words that you wouldn’t have otherwise, is an achievement!

Hope NaNo went well for you guys and here’s to another good NaNo next year!
