How To Fall Out of Love

October 23, 2012 § 2 Comments

Realise that you are nothing but an unwanted piece of crap tossed out into an icy winter street

along with a valentine love poem you poured your heart and soul into.

Figure out that he is cascading imperfections –

eyes as brown as mud and a crooked smile.

Toss out all your love poems, begin speaking the language of heartache

to an empty phone and the deserted couch in your sitting room.

Wake up to find traces of him in your bed –

his scent on your pillowcase, your bed sheets, your life.

Remember how mother once told you that people simply fall out of love

as easily as leaves fall off autumn trees.

Compare yourself to every heroine that ever existed

and call yourself a Shakespearean tragedy gone right

until he’s a blank canvas to paint over with defects

and his name is barely a whisper on your lips.
